Helen Grus, a police officer with 19 years on the job, told the Allison Inquiry she had never encountered anything like it: two babies sent home healthy, then dying in their parents’ arms while being fed. She says she noticed what she describes as a doubling of unexplained infant deaths in the Ottawa region. One autopsy, she says, found an enlarged heart. She says she raised her concerns with the chief of police on January 13, 2022, was sent home on unpaid leave on February 1 and suspended on February 4, 2022. She says the stated reason was accessing police records for personal reasons, which she disputes, saying the access was for police business. She maintains to this day that a thorough investigation is needed.
