Carol Messenger describes how a spinal cord injury reshaped her sense of self and her most intimate relationships. She says she lost all muscle tone and sensation, including the ability to experience sexual pleasure, and felt, in her words, "so broken" and unworthy — even while her husband remained supportive. She also describes a quieter pain: a feeling that some family members and friends didn’t fully believe her. It was her neurologist at UBC, she says, who told her to apply to Canada’s Vaccine Injury Support Program — a program she hadn’t known existed. When she did apply in fall 2023, she says she heard nothing for four months despite being told the wait was two weeks. What does it mean to navigate an injury of this scope while also fighting to be heard?
