Jamie R Daniel describes being hospitalized in a pain crisis from a transverse myelitis relapse while still in the postpartum period, with a baby who had just left the ICU. She says that when she broke down crying and told her medical team she could not live like this anymore, she was not suicidal — she was asking for help. Instead, she says a psychologist was brought in to discuss MAID, medical assistance in dying. She was in her early 30s, on heavy narcotics, with children aged three years and a few months at home. She says: "That moment broke me. It broke my husband. It broke my family." The question her account raises: how are expressions of distress by pain patients being interpreted and acted upon in Canadian hospitals?
