Jannine Duffy testifies before the Allison Inquiry about a series of physical changes she says affected her fingernails and toenails. She describes what she calls crystals — ‘like coarse salt’ — emerging through the nail beds, accompanied by pain she says was severe enough that she ‘just wanted to die.’ She also describes lesions that appeared under the skin, moved toward the extremities, and in one case became an open wound on a toe through which, she says, she could see her bone — a wound that persisted for about nine months. Her doctor, she says, was ‘very nervous’ and warned her she could potentially lose her fingers and toes, mentioning the possibility of gangrene. What causes such symptoms, and why did they appear where they did?
